“Faith Over Flings: Why Christian Dating is Different”

During my singleness, I can honestly say in the beginning I was relying on my own strength and will to find my life partner. As you can imagine time after time it failed. Being fed up with having my heart hurt I decided it was time to try something different to see if I would get a better result.

So, I decided to seek God's guidance in my relationships. This entailed me being intentional about my prayers, and alone time with just me and Him. I'm going to share with you what it looks like to be intentional, how to pray, and how to seek God's guidance for your relationship.

Intentional

- Being intentional requires commitment. We are called to intentionally seek God's will for our lives. This looks like a simple prayer asking for Him to show you his will for your life.

Galatians 6:7–8 says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

If you sow intentionality in dating, you’ll reap a relationship rooted in faith.

Prayer

- Prayer is the catalyst that opens the door for God’s miracles to work in your life. Nothing is too small or too big to pray about. God is almighty and He promises to give us above and beyond what we can imagine.

My mom once told me to make sure my prayers are specific. This means asking for what you think you want, but also inviting God to give you what he wants for you.

"God you know the desires of my heart, but you also know what I need and don't need. I'm inviting you to come and have your way in my life..."

James 1:5 — “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

Dating isn’t guesswork—God promises wisdom if we ask.

God's Guidance

- God's guidance pairs well with prayer. When you feel unsure or the opposite, too sure about a date you should ask for God's Guidance and then wait and see how you feel about it. The Lord gives us peace that surpasses our understanding, if you feel peace, calmness, no anxiety, about a dating somebody and I felt myself letting them into my heart, I would pray this,

"God if this person is not in your will for me, I pray that you would remove them from my life."

Praying a bold prayer like this took courage for me but also builds your trust in the Lord. Many times God would remove people from my life who obviously weren't in his plan and purpose for my life. But when the right one walks into your life and you pray this and 6 months later they're still here, your faith in Him increases.

Proverbs 3:5-6 — “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God’s guidance keeps us from chasing flings and helps us walk toward purposeful love.
